An accident in Southern Illinois has claimed the lives of two people. The crash involved a 67-year-old man driving a tractor-trailer and a 21-year-old woman that was in the driver's seat of a stopped car on Interstate 55. The automobile accident happened earlier this month near the west side of Lincoln, Illinois. Both individuals were declared dead at the scene around 11:40 p.m.

Illinois State Police stated that they and the Logan County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 to examine a car that had reportedly stopped in the right lane of traffic. At least one witness reported that the vehicle had no lights on.

Few injuries are as mysterious as brain injuries can be. While some in Chicago have experienced a traumatic brain injury with little long-term effects -- maybe a concussion that was properly treated -- and the individual is able to move forward with his or her life with little difficulty.

Then, there are some brain injuries that leave family members gathered by their loved ones bedside, hoping to see a glimmer of recognition in his or her eyes once more. Serious injuries such as these are often experienced in car accidents or falls. In one such case, a man has been fighting to regain the wife he believes he lost a part of.

A recent report may unnerve some recent hospital patients. Though the report comes from outside of Chicago, it does not mean that medical professionals at hospitals in the area are incapable of making a similar mistake. According to the aforementioned report, nurses at a hospital in Pennsylvania were to blame for medication errors that could have caused serious complications.

An investigation conducted by the state's health department found that two patients had received 10 times the correct dosage of two separate drugs. According to reports, this is not the first time that such an occurrence has happened at the hospital. A few months before these two incidents, three patients overdosed on pain medication while using self-controlled pumps.

If you are a woman that has experienced an injury you believe was caused by your birth control, you may want to take note. Pharmaceutical giant, Bayer, is expected to pay at least $110 million to settle approximately 500 product liability lawsuits. The company's Yasmin line of birth-control pills has allegedly caused blood clots in some women that were taking them, a dangerous side effect that could quickly turn fatal.

People familiar with the settlements have said that both Yasmin and Yaz contraceptives are included in the suits. The German pharmaceutical company will be paying an average of about $220,000 per case to resolve the claims made against it for its product.

After a debilitating accident occurred last year, a 55-year-old woman is trying to regain portions of her former self. Three goals that she has set for herself include being able to speak again, to walk more and to regain the strength in her right hand. Currently, she cannot verbally communicate with more than one word.

On March 2, 2011, the 55-year-old former nurse was run over by a pickup truck while walking into work. She received a very serious head injury that required a portion of her brain to be removed. The brain injury caused by complications from the accident has left her in a state that is, regrettably, less than the one she was in before the crash.

Some physicians pay more for malpractice claims than others

Chicago area residents are generally not aware of the situations that their medical providers have previously gotten into through the care that has been provided to other patients. It is not unheard of for a physician to have to defend themselves for their medical services, but the severities of those claims vary greatly.

In some circumstances, this may constitute grounds on which a medical malpractice lawsuit can be filed and won. A new study shows the costs that physicians incur while defending these suits and who really pays for those costs in the end may be surprising.

Even if most drivers obey the law, there are still some that do not. This simple truth is one that ended up costing the lives of two children in Chicago late last month. According to the authorities, a 36-year-old man from the 2200 block of South St. Louis Avenue in Chicago was behind the wheel of an SUV while under the influence of drugs.

The man was involved in a car accident at 43rd Street and Western Avenue around 6:35 p.m.; that he allegedly chose to flee from.

Two individuals who recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit are hoping to receive compensation for their medical bills and court costs. The plaintiffs have alleged that Kia Motors knowingly allowed a defective product to be put on the market. That allegedly defective product -- if this is true --contributed to the death of a female they both knew.

The wrongful death suit was filed in Madison County, Illinois earlier this month. According to records, one of the plaintiffs and the deceased woman were driving in a Kia Optima during March 2010. Heading east on Berm Highway/Illinois Route 143, the two were rear-ended by a drunk driver who has also been named as a defendant in the suit. He was driving a Chevy Malibu at the time.

Congress passes law, courts cope with new malpractice rule

People who live in Chicago may be able to worry less when they head to the hospital. Changes in legislation over the past decade may be creating improvements in patient safety, giving those that are in the hospital decreased concerns over the possibility of a misdiagnosis or a medication error.

In 2005, the U.S. Congress passed the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act which allowed patient safety organizations to be created. These new organizations were given the ability to perform activities geared toward the improvement of patient safety. One of these actions is the PSO report. These reports often discuss medical issues that have gone wrong in individual cases, but it seems that the PSQI Act does not allow for them to be used in a malpractice suit.

A severe accident and the ensuing trials may have drivers in Chicago paying more attention to their surroundings when on the road. The motor vehicle accident occurred on May 22, 2003 when two men -- a state trooper and a civilian receiving a warning -- were sitting in a Ford Crown Victoria patrol car.

According to reports, the trooper had pulled over the 57-year-old man and was giving him a warning about using the passing lane for too long. The two were sitting in the trooper's squad car when a tractor trailer crashed into the rear of the vehicle. Investigators found that the 13,000-pound truck was traveling at speeds around 65 mph at the time of impact.
